Creating content has become secondary to creating a website. Content Management Systems (CMS) have made creating a website simple, by following a few basic steps anyone can create a clean looking website. The question you need to ask yourself prior to installing a CMS is will it be capable of everything you need. Most hardcore CMS developers will tell you anything is possible with a CMS, which is mostly true, but the more complex the design the more you will need to learn.
Starting from scratch without a CMS can produce amazing results and epic failures, it all comes down to your capabilities. Modifying a CMS to work the way you want is no easy task for those unfamiliar with their inner workings. Blog and basic content = CMS, advanced interfaces and functionality = from scratch.
Most budget hosts and some premium hosts offer instant setup of the most popular content management systems. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, just to name a few. Each of these systems have their strengths and weaknesses. All of them have extensions or plugins which can enhance the functionality, from voting to instant messaging and forums.
The two most popular CMS systems are WordPress and Joomla. So how do you decide which to use? It is rather simple, WordPress was basically designed around the blogger and provides a neat and minimalist interface which allows you to quickly and easily add content. Joomla comes pre-loaded with ability to much more but requires a bit more learning to get started.
Both of these CMS systems allow you to install plugins or extensions as I mentioned before which can enhance the functionality of your site. In addition there are hundreds of free templates available to customize the look of your site easily.
If you are looking for instant functionality beyond the standard blog style format be prepared to spend some time figuring out how to get all working correctly. Creating your own site from scratch can take a lot of time but may be worth it in the long run for more complex designs. There are tons of freelancers available to help you along the way if you get stuck either way you choose to go, if you have some spare cash to throw around.
