Social Networking Addiction

Posted by Tim On September - 7 - 2009

Hold on I’m Tweeting. See my comment on FB? Yep, I Dugg it and told my friends on Linkedin. How many different networking sites do we need? I will leave that to the masses to decide. The addiction to these popular networking sites is amazing. Just look at the competition with Facebook, Google and Microsoft, they are all trying to get the best street price on their new drug and get the masses addicted. It does not matter, almost everyone is hooked with no rehab in sight.

This is not really that important, utilizing these tools and becoming a dealer is where the traffic and money is hiding out. Search engine optimization is still an important factor but the modern algorithms of the most popular search engines utilize these mass gatherings of people. Getting your link across these networking meccas means massive traffic.

I cannot begin to count the times that I have seen people vegetate behind their glowing LCD panels mindlessly typing away at their digital friends. The massive amounts of applications available on Facebook account for thousands of hours wasted, building virtual farms, kitchens, you name it, someone has created it.

So where does the addiction stop? Is there a rehab center for twitterholics or faceyspacies looking for their next accolade? No, but that is not really a bad thing either. While users pluck away the hours there are bots crawling these networking sites picking up bytes of information which can propel even the smallest sites into bandwidth overload. The trick is figuring out how. While all of the people are browsing and looking for updates on their friends cookie recipes, and watching lip syncing sisters sing “Barbie Girl”, there are advertisements strategically placed around their pages hinting and drawing their attention.

Developing a new “drug” for these social networking sites is no easy task. Getting your name or website pimped around these sites is a more realistic goal. Marketing your site can be a breeze, all it takes is a small group of networked friends to spread the word and a link to your site and “bam”, even Emeril is jealous.

I know, it is not that easy, if it was we would all have our sites published across these sites. I myself am still searching for the perfect catch phrase (drug name), the perfect friends (dealers), and the perfect story or application (drug) which will tax out my servers resources.

Finding Your Dealers

To find the right method to mass distribution of your site you need to start on the streets. Do your research and gather up the names and websites of some of the most popular bloggers, YouTubers, Twitterites, and so on. Leave comments, follow them, Digg their stories, try to form a network with these people. Once you are in, you can present your own product to them so that they can peddle it for you.

This is a process which will not happen overnight except in rare instances. Once you have achieved your goal within these massive networks you will have to maintain your status with all the others who got you started, it does not take much to spread the word that will make or break your new found status.

With that said I am off to try and follow and digg some of the biggest names out there. Good luck to everyone, if you find a rehab center you may have to take me in by force.

  1. Thanks – speaking for the mod team, it’s been rewarding to watch the forum grow up and to be part of its success.

  2. Human nature is always to remain in groups whether it is a matter of security, relationship bonding, experience share etc. This common nature among them has brought them to global platform of online meet up & create groups with commonality in taste, lifestyle etc. Online social networking’s have been around in various forms for nearly a decade in Kuwait and are created for many reasons. Despite their differences, online social networks do, however, commonly exhibit a number of the following concepts.
